About the Lakefield Trail

Interpretive Sign

Established in late 2000 as a community Millennium project, the Lakefield Trail offers the Lakefield Community a place to enjoy all the diversity the Village of Lakefield has to offer. The Trail connects to the Trans Canada Trail via the Peterborough County Rotary Trail. A quiet stroll, a more ambitious jog, or a leisurely cycle along the east loop of the Trail will take you past Lakefield's thriving business section. If a quieter setting that is more natural is your fancy, explore the Trail on the west side of the Otonabee River as it follows the southern tip of Katchewanooka Lake (a First Nation word for the beginning of the rapids) into the provincially significant wetland area of Imagine the Marsh. Or, cycle along the southwest loop past stately homes to Lock 26 of the Trent Severn Waterway. Historical interpretive signs along the 5.5 km Trail take you back in time, as they tell the story of Lakefield's notable literary past and canoe building heritage.

All sections of the 5.5 km., multiuse trail are fully accessible. The primary activity on the Lakefield Trail is walking, seconded by cycling. Other Trail activities include dog walking, jogging, rollerblading, and stroller walking. Sections of the Trail along Water Street lend themselves to both cycling (along a paved section of the roadside) and to walking (boardwalk along the riverside). The section of the Trail leading to Imagine the Marsh along the shores of Katchewanooka Lake is best for walking and bird watching. The Doug Sadler Viewing Tower offers bird watchers an ideal lookout over the vast marshland area. The Lakefield Trail offers an opportunity for everyone to get active and 'Do the Trail', no matter what level of activity they are interested in.

The Lakefield Trail benefits the Community in many ways:
