Discover the Lakefield Trail
Established in late 2000 as a community Millennium project, the Lakefield Trail is a 5.5 km. trail which, after meandering through the Village of Lakefield, connects to the Trans Canada Trail via the Peterborough County Rotary Trail.
All sections of the this multiuse trail are fully accessible and Historical interpretive signs along the Trail take you back in time, as they tell the story of Lakefield's notable literary past and canoe building heritage.
Your tour along the eastern portion of the Trail can include a side trip through Lakefield's thriving business section or, for a more natural setting, visit the west side of the Otonabee River as the Trail follows the southern tip of Katchewanooka Lake. Here the Imagine the Marsh Conservation Area section of the trail takes one to the Doug Sadler Viewing Tower, which offers bird watchers an ideal lookout over the vast marshland area. The southwest loop of the Trail passes by stately homes to Lock 26 of the Trent Severn Waterway.
Whether it's a quiet stroll, a leisurely cycle or a more ambitious jog, the Trail provides a place to enjoy all of the diversity the Village of Lakefield has to offer. It provides an opportunity for everyone to get active and 'Do the Trail', no matter what level of activity they are interested in.
We are proud of our Trail and invite you to share with us the pleasures of this beautiful, natural environment whether you live in our community or you are here for a visit.
Friends Program
When you become a Friend of the Lakefield Trail, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to maintain and sustain the Lakefield Trail for everyone in the community to safely enjoy.
As a Friend of the Lakefield Trail, you will receive a complimentary copy of the annual Lakefield Trail Newsletter bringing you up to date on all the Trail events and activities.
Over $16,000.00 has been donated so far from our Friends Program. All donations go towards the maintenance and future enhancements of the Trail.
Maintenance and safety of the Trail is the Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee's first priority one for the Stewardship Committee. We have been blessed with an abundance of natural wonders along our Trail. Occasionally the "natural wonders" interfere with the safety of the Trail. Currently, we need to repair damage to a portion of the paved section of the Trail along Hague Boulevard caused by the growth of neighbouring tree roots. This could cost up to $5,000.00 to repair the damaged section. We need your help.
If you would like to donate to this ambitious project and to ongoing maintenance activities on the Trail, simply print and fill out our Friend Pledge Form and mail it to the Township of Selwyn.

Memorial Bench and Tree Program
Benches and trees along the Trail make you feel welcome! Benches and trees enhance the overall trail experience for everyone. Residents and visitors are invited to sit and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The Trail isn't just a way to get from here to there, but a place to be; a place to take a moment and reflect on the history of the Village of Lakefield and those who helped make it the vibrant community that it is today.
As of 2010, 21 benches have been installed along the Lakefield Trail and 5 memorial trees have been planted. The Lakefield Trail Stewardship Committee thanks all those who have donated these enhancements to our Trail.
Memorial Benches
If you wish to mark a special occasion or celebration, to honour someone special or to create a lasting memory of a loved one, you can arrange to have a bench placed along the Trail in his or her name, usually in the location of your choice. A plaque with the donor's name and an inscription is placed with the bench. The benches are of the highest quality, are maintenance free and long lasting.
The Stewardship Committee will install the bench in your chosen location along the Lakefield Trail.

Memorial Trees
Take a deep breath, then thank a tree. Trees are the natural filters of the air we breathe and the water we drink. They are home to countless animals, and they help to combat greenhouse effects. Trees we plant today will be enjoyed for generations to come. Did you know that one healthy mature tree releases enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings for one year? Trees create shade to offset summer heat, provide food and habitat for wildlife, boost the health of watersheds and reduce soil erosion.
Planting trees is a simple way to improve our environment. Donating memorial Trail trees is a simple way to remember our loved ones for years to come. We thank those who have donated Trail Trees to be planted along the 5.5 km meandering Lakefield Trail in the Village of Lakefield. They will be enjoyed by all who use the Trail for years to come. For a cost of $300, we will plant a nursery quality tree complete with a plaque displaying the name of the donor and their inscription, in your choice of location along the Trail.
As a Christmas or birthday gift to a loved one or a special friend, why not consider donating a beautiful maple tree to the Lakefield Trail in their name? It is a unique way to give the gift of remembrance that can be enjoyed by all.
